United States authorities have provided preliminary insights into the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Herbert Wigwe, Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, alongside his wife, son, and former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, along with two crew members.
In a briefing held on Sunday, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) shed light on the tragic incident, indicating that adverse wintry weather conditions were among the factors considered in the crash.
Michael Graham, a member of the NTSB, addressed reporters, stating that their team was on-site to collect perishable evidence.
Graham emphasized the meticulous approach taken in examining all evidence to determine the probable cause of the crash. Eyewitness reports indicated inclement weather conditions at the time, characterized by rain and wintry mix.
Regarding passenger details, Graham noted that names would be released through the coroner’s office, without specifying a timeframe. Additionally, he highlighted that the helicopter lacked cockpit voice and flight data recorders, as it was not mandated to be equipped with such devices.
The National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation will encompass various aspects, including the chopper’s airworthiness, maintenance, structure, operations, meteorology, and air traffic control.
