The Independent National Electoral Commission has denied the allegation making round the country that the Commission is registering new voters despite the closure of the Continuous Voters Registration on July 31.
The Electoral Commission is also accused of conflicting details in the bio-data of the Voters Card, with registrants voicing their opinion through the trending hashtag Occupy INEC.
Reacting to this, the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Festus Okoye said the Commission is presently observing a cleanup exercise of the Continuous Voters Registration.
He, however, assured Nigerians that the Commission after the exercise will upload the list of eligible voters of the seven hundred and seventy-four local governments and polling units.
”I want to make it clear that the commission has not added any persons name to the voters register, our voters register still remains at eighty four million.”
”We are presently doing the clean up exercise in relation to those who registered during this continuous voters registration, it is only when we finish that, we are going to bring the permanent voters card and then we will integrate both the old and the new and then we will display in the seven hundred and seventy four local government areas of Nigeria and the eight thousand eight hundred and nine areas for claims and objections.”
