The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Beta Edu, expressed deep concerns over the insufficiency of the allocated budget for her ministry in 2024 to effectively combat poverty in Nigeria.
Edu, alongside officials from her ministry and its affiliated agencies, defended the 2024 budget, which included an overhead ceiling of N532.5 billion—a 28% increase compared to the 2023 budget.
The increase was purportedly intended to offset the impact of the current inflationary rate, standing at 27.33%, according to reports by The Punch.
However, Edu lamented that the 28% rise in the overhead ceiling did not align adequately with the prevailing inflation rates.
She emphasized that despite the adjustment, the budget allocation falls short of the financial support required to address the pressing issue of poverty in the country.
