In a concerted effort to address the persistent issue of inadequate power supply in Nigeria, the governors of the 36 states have embarked on a strategic initiative aimed at breaking the monopoly of Distribution Companies (Discos) in electricity distribution.
This move follows recent legislative reforms and the enactment of the Electricity Act of 2023. Under the newly enacted legislation, which grants states the authority to license, generate, transmit, and distribute electricity within their jurisdictions, Nigeria’s 36 states now possess the power to establish their electricity markets.
As part of this initiative, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has established a dedicated power desk and facilitated the constitution of a Forum of Commissioners of Power in all 36 states.
Asishana Okauru, the Director General of the NGF, emphasized the Forum’s proactive role in supporting states as they navigate the complexities of establishing their electricity markets.
He highlighted the engagement of consultants and the enlistment of donor support as key steps in facilitating the implementation of the Electricity Act at the sub-national level.
