In a proactive step towards mitigating food insecurity and addressing the longstanding challenge of herdsmen/farmers conflict, Ifelodun local government of Kwara State has initiated the registration and documentation of herdsmen residing within the council.
The disclosure was made by the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Kwara Chapter and the Transition Implementation Committee (TIC) Chairman of Ifelodun local government, Hon Jide Asonibare, during a press briefing on Monday.
The announcement took place at the opening ceremony of the 10th Kwara Trade Fair organized by the Kwara Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (KWACCIMA) held at the Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin.
Asonibare emphasized that the destruction of agricultural produce by herdsmen has had detrimental effects, discouraging farmers from investing in agriculture.
To address this issue, the local government has introduced the registration of herdsmen operating in Ifelodun. This initiative aims to identify, locate, and document contact information for herdsmen, facilitating easy tracking and fostering a more harmonious coexistence between farmers and herders.
Speaking on the Kwara Trade Fair, Asonibare highlighted the active participation of all 16 local government areas in the state. Each local government has a designated stand to showcase and sell their products, including food items at more affordable prices.
Asonibare took the opportunity to express gratitude to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for creating an enabling environment that supports business growth in Kwara State.
He encouraged residents of Kwara to actively participate in the Trade Fair by purchasing various goods, especially food items.
Asonibare stated that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to alleviate the economic hardships currently facing the country.
