Finland’s President Sauli Niinisto has declared it impossible to return asylum seekers failing protection criteria, emphasizing the need for policy adjustments.
Amid the arrival of five hundred asylum seekers, primarily from Yemen, Somalia, Syria, and Iraq via Russia in the last two weeks, Helsinki closed half its border crossings and accused Moscow of directing migrants to its borders.
President Niinisto, during a state visit to Poland, called for a European Union-wide solution to address the uncontrolled entry into the passport-free area, and also stressed the futility of individual countries handling neighboring crises independently.
