The Chairman of the Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Saheed Murtala Olayinka on Tuesday, said the union directed workers in the state to sit at home in response to the nationwide strike declared by the national leadership of the body.
Speaking in an interview with RoyalTimes in Ilorin, Olayinka said both the NLC and Trade Union Congress joined the total strike in the state.
“We are already together with them on the strike NLC,TUC togetherness. We are together in the strike.”
When asked how long the indefinite strike would go on for, Comrade Olayinka said the concerned leadership needs to come to an understanding to put an end to the ongoing strike.
“When they said the strike is indefinite that is there is no specific date for calling off or suspending the strike. in that situation, the leadership, the stakeholders, the government, will have to quickly come to a round table discussion. By so doing there is a need for them to understand each other and if there is understanding, no need for going on with the strike.”
RoyalTimes went around Ilorin, the state capital, and reported that pupils and students of public schools were sent back home upon arrival to school on Tuesday morning.
Recall, TUC President, Festus Osifo while addressing journalists on Monday, said the strike would remain until “government at all levels wake up to their responsibility.
“We gave some conditions that we want the government to meet regarding the brutalization of the president of the Nigerian Labour Congress and those conditions they were very clear without ambiguity whatsoever.”
“In order to further draw the attention of government we had a privative session last week Thursday but instead of government to come out strongly to condemn this criminality and stand on the side of justice and on the side of truth some people in government were running their mouth and making all kind of statement so, effective on Tuesday a nationwide strike is going to commence.”
“All affiliate of trade union congress of Nigeria, all affiliate of Nigeria Labour Congress, all state councils of the two centers have been mobilized adequately and this is going to be indefinite until government at all levels wake up to their responsibility. This is the decision of the joint-ness of NLC and TUC and we are going to carry it out to the latter. SOLIDARITY FOREVER.”
