The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has decried the delay to conduct local government election by the Kwara state government and called for the suspension of local government allocation to the state.
Alhaji Babatunde Mohammed, the state party chairman who made the call on Monday in Ilorin, alleged that the present government planned to shift the conduct of the local government election to 2025.
The state’s party chairman who described the action as “continued encroachment and usurpation of local government administration” called on President Bola Tinubu and the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, to halt the disbursement of Local Government allocation to the Kwara State Government pending when the government addresses the issues affecting local government administration in the state.
“Our party is worried, just like all well-meaning Kwarans, about the continued encroachment and usurpation of local government administrations since the inception of the Abdulrahman-led All Progressive Congress in Kwara State.”
The party further kicked against a bill before the state House of Assembly, seeking postponement of the Local Government election to the year 2025, and called for the conduct of council elections without further delay.
“It is in this note that we call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Lateef Fagbemi, to halt further disbursement of LG allocation to Kwara state pending when the government will address several issues around it and ensure the ongoing undemocratic bill seeking postponement of LG election to year 2025 is put on hold while council elections are conducted as soon as possible to breathe a sense of relief to our people at the grassroots.”
The Kwara PDP chairman who accused the constituted board of the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC), as card-carrying members of the APC said the opposing party will only take part in the election if the integrity of the KWASIEC board is guaranteed.
