President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero on Tuesday said the new minimum wage may be negotiated to one hundred thousand naira or two hundred thousand naira due to the rising cost of living.
It would be recalled that the Organised Labour on Monday shelved its planned strike action earlier scheduled to begin on Tuesday following a meeting with government authorities in Abuja.
According to Ajaero, the move was to give the government time to fulfill its part of the agreement reached, adding that the thirty-five thousand naira wage award is not a new minimum wage.
“The agenda was set by Mr president when he announced twenty five thousand and we looked at it empirically. Twenty five thousand does not fall to any category in what was to happen. We looked at fifty thousand and his negotiation they got to thirty,We insisted we can’t go below forty thousand and finally they came to thirty five thousand .”
“If we look at that thirty five thousand, we see above a hundred percent increase from the minimum wage and what we’re discussing is wage award and if you take that hundred percent and you take whatever we’re going to gain from the CNG buses when they eventually come on board. We’re going to gain close to a hundred percent if not more.”
