The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to implement a ban on the importation of Adire/Kampala and other local fabrics.
Representative Afolabi Afuape of Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Ogun State, during the parliamentary session on Tuesday, underscored the importance of protecting and promoting local production to uphold the country’s rich cultural legacy.
Citing the adverse effects of foreign imitations flooding the market, Afuape highlighted the detrimental impact on local producers, leading to a decline in livelihoods and job opportunities.
Upon putting the motion to a voice vote, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas received unanimous support from members present at the plenary session.
Subsequently, the House mandated the Committee on Commerce to collaborate with relevant agencies in monitoring and evaluating the progress of Nigeria’s cottage industry.
