In response to the impeachment allegations leveled against Edo State’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, by the State House of Assembly, Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa has taken decisive action, constituting a seven-member panel to investigate the claims.
A statement issued by the Registrar of the Edo State Judiciary, Benson Osagie Osawaru, on Saturday, March 23, 2024, outlined the formation of the panel in accordance with Section 188(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
The decision to initiate this investigation follows a resolution passed by 19 out of 24 members of the Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. The assembly directed the Chief Judge to form the panel and delve into the allegations against Shaibu.
Meanwhile, Shaibu, in response to the impeachment proceedings, sought recourse in the Abuja Federal High Court. Through an ex-parte motion, Shaibu, represented by his legal counsel Professor Oladoyin Awoyale, petitioned the court to restrain the assembly, the Chief Judge, and Governor Godwin Obaseki from further actions regarding the impeachment process until the substantive matter is resolved.
