2026 World Cup Qualifier: Rwanda Shoots Down South Africa, Go Top Of Nigeria’s Group

The Amavubi of Rwanda on Tuesday moved to the top of Nigeria’s World Cup Qualifying group after their comfortable 2-0 win over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

South Africa was leading Group C with 3 points before the clash despite playing one game less than Nigeria and others in the group.

Playing on the artificial turf at Huye Stadium, the host dominated the game and went ahead in the 12th minute through Innocent Nshuti.

Gilbert Mugisha doubled the lead for the Amavubis in the 28th minute of the game and ensured a sound lead going to the half-time.

Bafana Bafana took over the game in the second half and they almost reduced the deficit in the 77th minute but Rwanda looked solid at the back to see out the game.

The result moved Rwanda to the top of the group with 4 points with South Africa dropping to the second spot with 3 points.

The rest of the 4 teams including Nigeria are on 2 points from 2 matches. Nigeria will play host to South Africa and travel to Benin Republic in their next games in the qualifiers in June.
