A professor of Mathematics Education of the department of science education, University of Ilorin, Medinat Folorunsho Salman has identified lack of frequent practice, inadequate grasp of technical language, poor mathematical background of students, and influence of parents on child’s career choice as major problems affecting students’ performance in mathematics.
The Don who made the observation while delivering her paper titled “Language and Problem Solving: The Mathematics Education Link” which marked the one hundred and sixty-eighth inaugural lecture of the university expressed worry over students failure in mathematics.
Professor Salman who however called on mathematics teachers to always create a friendly atmosphere of success for learners, advised the teachers to pre-teach technical terms that may constitute barriers to students’ understanding of topics in mathematics.
According to our correspondent, Olarotimi Oshin, the Don also charged mathematics textbooks authors to clearly suggest the patterns considered appropriate to teach each topic. While advising students to imbibe the culture of readiness and willingness to learn, she warned them not to allow negative influence by their peers.
