Russia announced on Sunday that it had gained full control of the Ukrainian town of Avdiivka. This marks Russia’s most substantial territorial gain since the capture of Bakhmut in May 2023.
Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed the fall of Avdiivka as a significant victory and congratulated Russian troops for their success. The Kremlin issued a statement on its website, confirming Putin’s congratulatory message to the Russian soldiers.
Russian state television footage depicted scenes of Ukrainian flags being lowered in Avdiivka while Russia’s tricolor flag was raised, symbolizing Russia’s assertion of control over the town, including the strategic coke plant.
Despite Russia’s claim of full control over Avdiivka, Ukrainian forces are reportedly still entrenched at the Soviet-era coke plant within the town.
Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov stated that measures were being taken to clear the town of any remaining Ukrainian militants and to block Ukrainian units entrenched at the Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Plant. However, Ukrainian authorities have not yet issued a public comment on this latest development.
