Bayo Onanuga, a presidential media aide and veteran in the media industry, has criticized the Nigerian media for what he perceives as exaggeration in the reportage of insecurity in the country.
Politics Nigeria gathered Onanuga expressed his views in response to a newspaper headline that he believed did not accurately reflect the reality of the state of affairs.
In a post on his social media handle, Onanuga acknowledged the efforts of Nigeria’s security agencies in addressing issues of kidnapping, banditry, communal killings, and terrorism.
He emphasized that these efforts, often understated, have contributed to making the country safer, at least in comparison to some other nations facing similar challenges.
Cautiously advising the media, he said, “Media reporting about cases of kidnapping, communal killings, and isolated terrorism acts must show some moderation by not giving the impression that all Nigerians no longer sleep with two eyes closed or are not safe in going about their day-to-day business.”
Onanuga called for a balanced approach, suggesting that citizens and the media should complement the government’s efforts to eliminate violent crimes.
