Amidst the political turbulence in Rivers State, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State House of Assembly have disclosed the reasons behind their mass defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday.
Letters elucidating the motives for the defection were submitted to the House Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, and were subsequently read aloud during the legislative session.
The Speaker said the primary argument put forth by the defectors revolves around the internal schisms within the PDP, particularly the protracted power struggle for the position of National Secretary.
In response to the defection, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, engaged with the media on Monday, expressing the party’s commitment to exploring all possible avenues to regain the seats left vacant in the State House of Assembly.
He added that the PDP plans to approach the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to demand fresh elections to replace the twenty-seven members who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
