A landslide at a small-scale mine in northern Tanzania has claimed the lives of 22 individuals, according to government officials.
The tragedy unfolded at the Ng’alita mine in the Bariadi district of the Simiyu region. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her profound sadness at the loss in a statement on Sunday.
The victims were described as small-scale miners, contributing to their livelihoods, families, and the nation’s development.
Faustine Mtitu, the acting commander for the region’s fire and rescue force, stated that rescue operations concluded on Sunday, confirming that all 22 deceased were men. Mtitu expressed concern that safety procedures were not followed at the mine.
