In the early hours of Monday, February 26, 2024, the Kwara State Fire Service received an urgent distress call reporting a fire outbreak at the Akumaju compound in the Ita-Amodu area of Ilorin.
According to a statement by the fire service spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, the firefighters swiftly mobilized, departing from their station with their fire appliance to address the emergency.
Upon reaching the scene, firefighters were met with a challenging situation: multiple rooms ablaze, their flames licking through the darkness.
Undaunted by the formidable task ahead, the firefighters wasted no time and immediately set to work, demonstrating their expertise and unwavering commitment to combatting the inferno.
Despite the ferocity of the fire, their determined efforts succeeded in containing it, halting its further spread and averting potentially greater destruction.
Tragically, the fire had already exacted its toll, ravaging three out of the six rooms within the compound. Through meticulous investigation, authorities determined that the fire originated from a refuse pile ignited by an unidentified individual, which subsequently ignited the adjacent rooms, leading to the blaze.
In the aftermath of the harrowing incident, Prince Falade John, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, expressed his heartfelt condolences to those affected by the fire.
He stressed the paramount importance of public vigilance and safety awareness, urging citizens to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing similar incidents.
