The House of Representatives has appealed to the military, urging them to refrain from retaliating against innocent residents of Delta State following the murder of seventeen military personnel in Okuama, a community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state.
The appeal was made while considering a motion of urgent national importance presented by Honourable Babajimi Benson.
In a bid to prevent further escalation of the situation, the House expressed concern that any retaliation could further demoralize the military, calling on the military to abide by the law and avoid any actions that could lead to further retaliation.
Meanwhile, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday, said those involved in the killing of soldiers in Delta State may be mercenaries, calling for the recruitment of more policemen so that the military would not be dragged into civil matters.
Speaking on Tuesday during a debate on two merged motions by Senators Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, and Edeh Dafinone, Akpabio opined that those who killed the soldiers may be mercenaries.
“While law-abiding citizens are assured that there will be no reprisal on the part of the troops, we enjoin all to go about their normal activities, even as ongoing efforts are scaled up to positively identify and isolate the criminals to account for their atrocious deeds,” it said.
