In a devastating incident on Tuesday, the Kwara State Fire Service responded to a fire outbreak at Peke village along Oko-Olowo Bode Saadu Expressway in Moro Local Government Area, Kwara State.
The tragic event involved a petrol tanker with registration, a heavy-duty truck, and an eighteen-seater bus, resulting in the loss of twenty-five lives, while around fifteen individuals were rescued with injuries.
According to a statement from Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson of Kwara fire service, preliminary investigations indicated that the petrol tanker, en route from Niger state, was using the wrong side of the road, leading to a catastrophic head-on collision with a heavy-duty truck traveling from Lagos state.
The impact of the collision sparked a ferocious fire that swiftly engulfed both vehicles, also affecting the 18-seater bus originating from Lagos.
In response to the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service expressed deep sorrow over the lives lost and underscored the importance of prioritizing safe driving practices.
The Director issued a stern warning to road users to consistently adhere to safety measures, emphasizing the critical role they play in preventing such catastrophic events.
“On November 28, 2023, around 15:18 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service responded to a fire at Peke village along Oko-Olowo Bode Saadu Expressway in Moro Local Government Area, Kwara State. The incident involved a petrol tanker with registration number JJN 17 XW, a heavy-duty truck, and an eighteen-seater bus. The firemen diligently worked to quench the inferno, but unfortunately, 25 lives were lost, and around 15 people were rescued with injuries.”
“Investigations revealed that the petrol tanker, traveling from Niger state, was using the wrong side of the road, resulting in a head-on collision with a heavy-duty truck from Lagos state. The collision ignited a fire that rapidly consumed both vehicles, also affecting the 18-seater bus from Lagos.”
“Expressing deep sorrow, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service emphasized the need for road users to prioritize safe driving practices, issuing a warning to adhere to safety measures consistently,” he concluded.
