The Kwara State Government, in a bid to rid the capital city of Ilorin of uncleanliness and address societal challenges, has initiated the evacuation of beggars and lunatics from various locations in the metropolis.
The evacuation, carried out by a dedicated team from the State Ministry for Social Development, targeted key areas such as Post Office, Tipper Garage, Offa Garage, and Geri Alimi axis during the flag-off.
According to a statement by Oluwole Damilola, Press Secretary, Ministry of Social Development, the exercise resulted in the evacuation of no fewer than ten lunatics and thirty-one beggars, who were subsequently taken to one of the Ministry’s rehabilitation homes for treatment and eventual repatriation.
Commissioner for Social Development, Hon. Opeyemi Oluwakemi Afolashade, addressed journalists after the flag-off, emphasizing that the evacuation was a crucial step to cleanse the society of defacement and environmental challenges.
“Kwara State will not condone any act of street begging, as it depicts laziness and also litters the environment, while wandering lunatics can also pose danger to the society,” stated Hon. Afolashade.
The Commissioner highlighted that the presence of some beggars and lunatics in public spaces could be harmful, with some potentially disguising themselves to carry out illicit activities.
She issued a stern warning to those involved in such acts, urging them to desist or face the consequences of the law.
