In a session marked by parliamentary recourse, Hon. Lawal Ayanshola Saliuh (Ipaiye/Malete/Oloru) leveraged Order VII, Rule 38 of the House Rules to present three petitions during a plenary session at the Kwara State House of Assembly.
The petitions, all of significant concern, encompass issues ranging from alleged injustices in the 2021 and 2022 promotion exercises at Kwara State Polytechnic to land encroachment disputes involving the institution.
The first petition, titled “Passionate Appeal to Save our Soul,” was submitted by concerned members of staff of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.
The petition specifically called on the House to investigate what the staff perceives as injustices meted out to them during the 2021 and 2022 promotion exercises under the leadership of Engr. (Dr) Abdul Jimoh Mohammed.
The second petition, “Petition against the Rector Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin,” was presented by members of Budo Lima family along Dangiwa Village and Ara Village in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State.
This petition urged the House to intervene and halt the construction of a structure by the Rector and Management of Kwara State Polytechnic on the only access road serving over 25 communities.
The petitioners argued that this construction could lead to public unrest and emphasized that, given the case’s presence before a competent court of law, all parties should refrain from any action until a judgment is passed.
The third petition, “Save Our Soul, Kwara State Polytechnic Encroachment on Communal Land and High-Handedness,” was submitted by Barrister Oluwasegun Ayinde on behalf of Abdullahi Iyanda Kolayo, Raji Adio of Hassan Village, Abdulkadir Abdullahi Kawu, Karimu Atanda Kawu of Kawu Village, and Alh.
Busari Adisa Alaro, Saka Ayinla Alaro of Alaro Village in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara. The petitioners claimed that Kwara State Polytechnic encroached on their communal land without consent or compensation.
Upon laying the petitions on the table, the House referred them to the House Committee on Public Petition for thorough investigation.
The committee has been tasked to provide a comprehensive report on the matters within two weeks, reflecting the commitment of the Kwara State House of Assembly to address the concerns raised by the petitioners and ensure a fair resolution.
