In a bid to safeguard consumer rights and interests, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has unveiled deceptive tactics employed by syndicates within the Garki Modern Market in Abuja, particularly in the sale of rice where products are being sold below the claimed weight.
According to reports, the revelation came to light following a targeted enforcement operation conducted by the commission, as disclosed in a statement signed by the acting Executive Vice Chairman, Adamu Abdullahi.
During the operation, officials discovered significant discrepancies between the advertised weight of rice packages, specifically 25kg and 50kg bags, and their actual content.
In response to these findings, the FCCPC has initiated legal actions, issuing summonses to the perpetrators for further investigation and demanding written undertakings to cease such deceptive practices.
As the festive season approaches, Abdullahi urged consumers to be vigilant and demand full value for their money. He advised verifying the weight of rice packages to ensure alignment with stated claims and encouraged reporting any inconsistencies through the FCCPC’s complaint tab on their website.
