Ahead of the 2023 General Election, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has expressed concern over the use of youth to perpetrate violence during election.
Speaking during a day symposium organized by Mass Communication students from Kwara State University, Dr. Adeshina Tayo, who represented Honourable Garba Attahiru Madami, called on governments at various levels to tackle the problem of unemployment, hunger, and poverty.
He also disclosed that the commission has created various organizations at various levels to educate the youths against creating violence during the election.
“We have created various groups from the Federal, State, and Local Government level to educate the youth to not engage in violence during the election.
In his remarks, the Police Public Relation Officer PPRO SP Ajayi Okasanmi stated that the Police are prepared to create adequate security during the 2023 General election.
“The Police are prepared for the election. We have sent some of our officials to countries outside of Nigeria to monitor the election and implement the knowledge, strategy, and experience gathered during the election.
” Also, I want to inform you, all of you, that the police is ready to prosecute anybody that involve him or herself in any criminal act during the election.
Speaking on the role played by the media in election, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kwara Chapter, Abdullateef Lanre Ahmed said the media is assisting in sensitizing the citizens to partake in the election.
“When you look at the number of the population to the number of voters, you will agree with me that a lot still needs to be done.
” I know the media is trying in sensitizing the citizens to vote and get their Permanent Voters Card PVC.”
