The House of Representatives has urged President Bola Tinubu to expedite the investigation of the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, and resume the suspended implementation of the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP).
In a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Billy Adesuwa Osawaru (APC, Edo), the House emphasized the need for the federal government to take immediate action to address the increasing hardship faced by vulnerable Nigerians relying on social investment programs.
Osawaru highlighted that the suspension of Minister Betta Edu and other officials had led to the halt in the implementation of critical government interventions such as the N-Power Programme, Conditional Cash Transfer Programme, Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme, and Home Grown School Feeding Programme.
Furthermore, Osawaru raised concerns about a proposed recommendation to establish a new steering committee under the Ministry of Finance to oversee social investment programs.
He argued that such a move would contradict existing laws, which place these programs under the purview of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
In light of these concerns, the House called on the federal government to refrain from implementing the proposed steering committee and instead direct a serving Minister of State to oversee the necessary approvals and implementation of the NSIP.
