President Bola Tinubu has directed the comprehensive implementation of the Oronsaye Report, leading to the merging, scrapping, and relocation of several government agencies.
The announcement came following the Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, where Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed the decision to State House Correspondents.
The Minister of Information elaborated on the implications, highlighting that numerous agencies, commissions, and departments would undergo significant changes, including being scrapped, modified, merged, or relocated to enhance operational efficiency.
“So in a very bold move today, this administration, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, consistent again with his courage to take very far-reaching decisions in the interest of Nigeria, has taken a decision to implement the so-called Oronsaye Report.
“Now, what that means is that a number of agencies, commissions, and some departments have actually been scrapped. Some have been modified, and marked while others have been subsumed. Others, of course, have also been moved from some ministries to others where the government feels they will operate better,” said Idris.
Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Mrs. Hadiza Bala-Usman, further disclosed that a committee has been constituted by the President to oversee the implementation of mergers, scrapping, and relocations within a 12-week timeframe.
The Oronsaye Report, submitted in 2012, revealed the extensive proliferation of government bodies, with a total of 541 statutory and non-statutory Federal Government parastatals, commissions, and agencies. The report, spearheaded by former Head of Civil Service, Stephen Oronsaye, recommended a series of reforms to rationalize and optimize government operations.
Among the key recommendations were reducing the number of statutory agencies from 263 to 161, scrapping 38 agencies, merging 52, and reverting 14 to departments within various ministries.
