The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) clarified that there have been no directives from the Federal Government regarding the reopening of the country’s borders.
The announcement was made by the Customs Comptroller of the Kwara Area, K.D Ilesanmi, during the commemoration of the 2024 International Customs Day.
Speaking with RoyalTimes, Ilesanmi shed light on the importance of efficient customs regimes and smooth logistics in global business, emphasizing the impact on businesses engaged in importing and exporting goods. He stated that until further notice, the border would remain closed, and as a result, urged importers in Kwara state to utilize port facilities for their consignments.
The Customs Comptroller acknowledged the vital role that media houses play in disseminating information to the public. He expressed gratitude for their partnership and interest in customs-related matters and general national concerns. Additionally, Ilesanmi appealed to the media to maintain their focus on these issues and keep the public informed.
“What is special is to commemorate establishment of Nigeria custom or establishment of customs cooperative council which is now known as world customs organization 1952 and it was on 26th of january 1952 and so every year has been dedicated as the international custom day for the celebration and different things have been coming every year and it is like the policy trust of the world custom organization on the way ought to follow by customs and all over the world as of the theme of this year. The theme for this year is customs engaging traditional and new partners for the last customs operation.”
“The federal government feels the border in kwara state command is still closed and is under lock and key and we have not received any directive towards this reopening.”
“For the importers they can import their consignment through commands where they can import their consignment through the port, that’s my advice for now until the border is open in Kwara state.”
“About our activities, the medias should be interested, they have been partnering with us and we appreciate the media when we invite them, they come like the time when we made an arrest of smuggled or stolen vehicles in lagos the were bearing same plate numbers, we invited them to court and they converted it for us. Not only that, when the federal government, the control general of customs gave us new patrol vehicles to be able to do more in our operations, we invited them and they covered our activities.m They have been very supportive to us and we’re very grateful to us.”
