Niger has reportedly yet to reopen its border with Benin, even after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) lifted sanctions imposed on the country following last year’s military coup, including border closures.
According to local officials on Monday, two days after ECOWAS announced the lifting of sanctions, the border between Niger and Benin has not been reopened. This comes despite the fact that other sanctions, such as a no-fly zone and asset freezes, were lifted.
Before the border closure, the Niger-Benin corridor served as a vital route for 80 percent of Niger’s freight, with goods transiting through the Beninese port of Cotonou, located approximately 1,000 kilometers from Niger’s capital, Niamey.
