The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a United Nations Migration Agency, has issued a warning to potential migrants about a syndicate specializing in providing fake employment letters to Nigerians seeking work in the United Kingdom (UK).
As a result of falling victim to this fraudulent scheme, over a thousand Nigerians currently find themselves stranded in the UK, facing rejection by organizations that did not issue the employment letters.
During a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Mr. Laurent De Boeck, the Chief of Mission at IOM, disclosed that more than 260,000 Nigerians approached the organization in 2023 for guidance on legal migration routes, seeking advice and undergoing pre-departure medical health assessments.
Vanguard reported that De Boeck emphasized the need for potential migrants to exercise caution and obtain accurate information before embarking on any migration journey.
He revealed that some victims lost significant sums, up to $10,000 each, in desperate attempts to secure foreign employment through the syndicate.
