The Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) has issued a stern warning to the Kwara State Police Command Commissioner, CP Olaiya, cautioning against attempts to stifle press freedom in favor of individuals linked to the Kwara State Polytechnic.
In a statement released on Tuesday by ASKOMP’s Secretary, Oyewale Oyelola, the association expressed concern over recent actions taken by the police, including the attempted detention of two journalists from Informant247, Adiza-Jaji Azeez and Salihu Ayatullahi.
These journalists, despite obtaining enforcement of their fundamental rights from a competent court, were reportedly targeted for their reporting on the Polytechnic.
ASKOMP highlighted the need for CP Olaiya to uphold press freedom and avoid tarnishing his professional reputation by allegedly favoring individuals associated with the Polytechnic.
The association commended the professionalism displayed by the Inspector General of Police during his tenure as the Kwara Commissioner of Police and urged CP Olaiya to follow suit.
Furthermore, ASKOMP emphasized that the police, as a law enforcement agency, should adhere to legal procedures and allow conflicting parties to address their grievances in court.
The association underscored the importance of respecting the rule of law and ensuring that journalists can carry out their duties without fear of intimidation or harassment.
The statement from ASKOMP reflects a growing concern among media practitioners regarding press freedom and the protection of journalists’ rights in Kwara State.
The association’s call for CP Olaiya to respect the principles of democracy and uphold the rights of the press serves as a reminder of the crucial role played by media in promoting transparency and accountability within society.
