In a significant breakthrough towards regional stability, Armenia and Azerbaijan have jointly declared their commitment to exchanging prisoners of war and working towards normalizing their strained relations.
The announcement has garnered positive reactions from the European Union and the United States.
The two nations have been entangled in a protracted conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, a region that Azerbaijan successfully reclaimed in a swift offensive against Armenian separatists in September.
The conflict, spanning decades, reached a turning point with Azerbaijan’s military campaign, ending ethnic Armenians’ three-decade rule in the contested territory.
Late on Thursday night, a joint statement was issued by Armenia and Azerbaijan, expressing their collective determination to seize “a historical chance to achieve a long-awaited peace in the region.”
Both parties expressed optimism about signing a peace treaty before the close of the year.
