The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has vowed to mobilise against those standing against local council autonomy. To this end , the union has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to institute a probe panel to scrutinize the states and local councils’ joint account in the last 10 years.
National President of NULGE, Ibrahim Khaleel, who stated this in Abuja in view of the struggle to ensure autonomy of the third tier of government said the joint state and local governments account has been subjected to massive abuse over the years.
According to him ,the move became necessary since there is little or nothing on ground in the 774 local councils to show for the huge resources allocated to states over the years even as he called on President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint reputable auditors to carry out forensic auditing of the joint state and local governments account within the last 10 years.
Speaking further, Khaleel applauded the governors of Benue, Cross River and Sokoto states for supporting autonomy of local councils in their states. He also condemned Plateau, Kwara, Niger, Ogun, Bauchi and Bayelsa states and other Houses of Assembly that have temporarily stepped down debate on council autonomy.
