The raging battle for the speakership of Kwara state house of assembly has stepped up as the concerned foundation members of the All Progressive has thrown their weight behind Honorable Saheed Popoola for the post of speaker.
Speaking with newsmen at a press briefing, the spokesperson of the group, Alhaji Abdulganiyu Saka who noted that the rule of law and experience should not be sacrificed on the altar of sectionalism as being clamoured for by some individuals, claimed that speakership should be allotted to a particular constituency.
According to the group, the constitution states that election of speaker shall be conducted while a member-elect, addressing the clerk, shall propose another member-elect with at least state assembly legislative experience from the house to the speaker and shall move that such member do take the chair of the house speaker.
According to the group, the leadership quality and maturity displayed by Prince Saheed Popoola when he was the chairman of Offa local government, governing council member of Kwara poly, former commissioner and the only returning member of the house is a testimonial that he will successfully manage the 9th Assembly of Kwara state house of Assembly
While noting that about ninety five positions of the incoming administration are from the decampee members, Saka said that the foundation members of the party have been seriously marginalized.
The group therefore called on leaders of the party to prevail in the matter, noting that the rule of law must be followed in the election of speaker of the house.
