Annelle Sheline, a prominent Middle East analyst advocating for human rights within the United States government, has resigned from her position at the US Department of State in protest against President Joe Biden’s Israel policy.
Sheline announced her resignation in an interview with the Washington Post on Wednesday, citing the mounting death toll in Gaza, which has now reached 32,490 since October 7.
She said, “I wasn’t able to really do my job any more,” Sheline told the newspaper. “Trying to advocate for human rights just became impossible.”
Her decision to step down follows the resignation of another State Department official, Josh Paul, who served as a director in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs and resigned in October of the previous year.
