Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has initiated legal proceedings against Nigeria’s governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Mr. Nyesom Wike, concerning their purported failure to account for an estimated N40 trillion in federal allocations allocated to local governments across the states and the FCT.
The lawsuit follows revelations made by former President Muhammadu Buhari in December 2022, alleging widespread mismanagement of funds.
In suit filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, SERAP is seeking an order to compel the governors to disclose the details of LGA allocations and the actual disbursement of funds from 1999 to date. Additionally, SERAP is demanding Mr. Wike to publish similar details regarding federal allocations intended for the Area Councils in the FCT.
Arguing on legal grounds, SERAP invokes the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended), the Freedom of Information Act, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. They assert that transparency obligations are imposed on the governors and Mr. Wike regarding the handling of LGA allocations.
