The attention of the Kwara state government and all the security agencies has been drawn to the recent activities of scavengers across the state and Nigeria at large, to this end some residents have called for a ban on scavenging activities in kwara state.
Some residents who spoke with our senior correspondent Olarotimi Oshin said that they have lost their small generators, vehicle parts, foodstuffs, charcoal stove clothes, water iron pipes and other valuables to the scavengers popularly called “Mai Bolaa” .
A housewife, Mary Adekunmi said the menace of scavengers was becoming increasingly worrisome. She added that the matter is now up to a point where residents wash their clothes and sit outside to monitor them till they dry as taking eyes off them could be risky.
Other residents lamented that the scavengers who come into their compounds purportedly to collect trash but end up stealing other items . They alleged that the scavengers have also been linked to various anti-social activities such as housebreaking, pickpocketing and molestation of children and women in desolate compounds and neighbourhoods.
The respondents concluded that It is now risky to leave valuable items on balconies as criminals masquerading to be mobile dumpsters may abscond with the properties .
