In response to the recent call by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors for urgent action to address Nigeria’s economic challenges, the Presidency has demanded accountability from the opposition governors regarding their utilization of increased allocations.
Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information & National Orientation, emphasized the need for transparency in the spending of state resources, particularly amidst concerns over economic hardships facing Nigerians.
As reported by Dailypost, he asserted that the federal government is effectively managing the nation’s economy and meeting financial obligations, despite the prevailing economic and security challenges.
The minister’s remarks were prompted by the PDP governors’ assertions regarding the nation’s economic and security situation, where they urged bipartisan cooperation to tackle pressing issues. However, Idris criticized the opposition governors for allegedly misrepresenting the country’s economic status and engaging in political maneuvering.
The statement partly reads: “Governors elected on the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) platform met yesterday in Abuja and addressed a press conference, where their chairman, Governor Bala Mohammed, read out their position on the country’s economic and security situation.”
“We welcome their call for a bipartisan approach to solving our nation’s economic and security problems. As critical stakeholders and leaders at the sub-national level, the PDP governors certainly have the right to state their position on national concerns, as is expected.”
Idris highlighted discrepancies in the performance of PDP-governed states, citing instances of unpaid salaries, pension arrears, and failure to implement the minimum wage. He challenged the PDP governors to fulfill their obligations to workers, pensioners, and local contractors, emphasizing the potential positive impact on citizens’ livelihoods.
