In a tense turn of events on Tuesday, armed policemen deployed teargas to disperse 16 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Plateau State House of Assembly.
The lawmakers, who were recently ousted by the Court of Appeal, had gathered at the Rayfield Old Government House in Jos, along with their supporters, with intentions to resume plenary.
The security operatives took control of the Government House premises, barricading access to the chambers of the House of Assembly. The sacked lawmakers, undeterred by the security presence, remained determined to enter the premises.
The situation at the Rayfield Old Government House highlights the deepening political crisis in Plateau State, with both sides of the dispute refusing to back down. The sacked lawmakers, in defiance of the court ruling, remained steadfast in their assertion that the decision was unjust.
