Parents Groan As Students Resume School Activities In Kwara

written by Adewale Adeyemi September 18, 2023

Following the resumption of primary and secondary school student into a new academic session after the long term break, parents in kwara state express dissatisfaction and discomfort over the hike in school fees and transportation

They made the call in separate interviews with RoyalFM Correspondent  in the state capital for the 2023/2024 academic session today saying  the economic situation in the country had led to an increase in school fees, uniforms and books impacting the level of preparation for their children’s resumption.

Mrs Nike Akanni, mother of three stated that she observed a increase of about twenty thousand naira in her children school fees including and increase in the school transport fare

‘‘I have three children in school and the school fee of that school are so high that when I collected their pay slip I notice an increase of more than twenty thousand naira can you imagine, also their transport fare was twenty-five thousand last session but now it is thirty-five thousand naira, I don’t even know how I will take them to school this term and bring them back home because the transport fare is just too high is only God that can help me, I am presently in a tight corner has the economic situation has affected everything, from school fee to transport to feeding including textbooks and other little little things that aren’t even budgeted for. We are just hoping for the best if the government can intervene quickly and provide a better solution.

Also speaking Mrs Juliana a business woman while explaining her plight stated that she took loans in order to be able to meet the payment of school fees, transportation fee and feeding adding that change in school of children is not an option presently

‘‘we’ve been taking loans to pay children school fees and buy them books and things necessary, changing children schools now because of the expenses of school bus is not even an option, the country is so hard that even things we bought at the rate of one thousand five hundred naira is now sold for four thousand plus it can’t be taken before but because of the interest added on it. I don’t know what this country is getting into, talking about children resumption, what of their feeding eighty-five percent of student eat rice, things are very hard for us in this country government need to do something please’.

In her reaction Mrs Juliet urge school authority to allow parents and guardians pay the fees in installment in order to meet up with other necessary expenses

‘‘It will be a very good idea if the school authority can allow we parents to be paying the student school fees installmentally because some of we parents have more than one or two children in school and the school fees is quite expensive so for we to be able to meet up with other expenses like clothing, feeding including house rent, the school should be able to give us such privilege of installmental payment so we can be able to meet up with payment of our children fees’’
