The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Osun State government clash over the emergence of new monarchs for Iree and Igbajo communities. The APC accuses Governor Ademola Adeleke of promoting crises by interfering with the selection of legally installed monarchs.
In a statement by its chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, the APC alleged that the Adeleke administration, through a white paper, declared vacant the stools of the Aree of Iree and Owa of Igbajo, following a probe into the previous governor’s appointments.
“We are appealing to the peace-loving people of Igbajo not to take the laws into their hands but to continue to put their hope and expectations in the hands of God and the supremacy of the rule of law which has been the pillar of strength of every reasonable and responsible community,” the APC chairman statement read.
Regarding the Aree of Iree stool, the APC called for caution from the international community to prevent further crises in Igbajo and Iree.
In response, the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, defends the government’s actions, stating they were in accordance with tradition and chieftaincy laws.
Alimi explained that the white paper called for a fresh selection process in Igbajo to ensure fairness and equity. He clarified that the government intervened when Igbajo kingmakers failed to convene for the selection process, invoking legal provisions to appoint warrant kingmakers who then selected an Owa-elect.
