Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state as part of any post-war scenario, highlighting divisions between Israel and the United States.
Speaking at a nationally broadcast news conference on Thursday, Netanyahu pledged to continue the military offensive in Gaza until Israel achieves a “decisive victory over Hamas” and emphasized his position on security control over all territory west of the Jordan River.
The comments come amid ongoing military operations in Gaza, with Israel resisting calls to scale back the intensity of its offensive. While the United States has vetoed UN resolutions calling for a ceasefire, it has expressed the view that the establishment of a Palestinian state should be part of the post-war scenario.
US National Security Adviser John Kirby emphasized that there would be no reoccupation of Gaza after the war and reiterated the US commitment to a two-state solution.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller noted that Israel has an opportunity to engage with the idea of a Palestinian state, and regional countries are ready to provide security assurances.
