British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has pledged to begin the process of sending asylum seekers to Rwanda within the next 10 to 12 weeks, defying opposition in Parliament and pressing forward with controversial legislation aimed at curbing irregular migration.
Addressing the upper house of Parliament, Sunak affirmed his determination to push through the divisive plan, stating that the government has already made arrangements to transport asylum seekers to Rwanda via commercial charter planes.
Sunak’s announcement comes amidst mounting resistance from lawmakers, particularly in the House of Lords, who have sought to introduce safeguards to the proposed legislation.
The Prime Minister emphasized his resolve to expedite the implementation of the plan, signaling a swift timeline for its execution. “No ifs, no buts. These flights are going to Rwanda,” Sunak declared during a news conference, underscoring the government’s commitment to the policy.
