Republican senators in the United States have blocked a crucial 106 billion dollar funding package intended to support Ukraine and Israel, defying urgent appeals from President Joe Biden.
The rejection of the measure comes amid deep-seated frustration among Republicans over the exclusion of immigration reforms they had insisted be included in the funding proposal.
The funding package, which faced unanimous opposition from the 49-member Republican minority in the Senate, included 61 billion dollar earmarked to aid Ukraine in maintaining pressure on Russia during the harsh winter months.
President Biden, emphasizing the potential consequences of the Senate’s decision, had earlier warned of dire implications for Kyiv and characterized it as a “gift” to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
The Republican senators cited the lack of government action on the issue of immigration as their primary reason for opposing the funding proposal.
