The Nigerian Super Eagles secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Cote D’Ivoire in their second match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé on Thursday evening.
Coach José Peseiro made two key changes to the lineup that faced Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, introducing Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze into the starting eleven.
Nigeria’s first significant chance came in the 7th minute when a through ball from Samuel Chukwueze found Victor Osimhen, but the Napoli striker couldn’t hit the target.
The breakthrough for Nigeria came in the 51st minute when Victor Osimhen was brought down in the penalty area. After a VAR review, a penalty was awarded, and William Troost-Ekong converted it, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and giving the Super Eagles the lead.
