A woman identified only as Rukayat has been apprehended by the Lagos State Police Command for the alleged poisoning of her one-year-old daughter with insecticide in the Oworonshoki area of the state
According to reports, the tragic event unfolded around 11 a.m. on Friday morning with authorities disclosing that Rukayat’s infant daughter had been battling epilepsy, and purportedly, the mother reached a breaking point, resorting to poisoning as a solution to her turmoil.
According to a police source, Rukayat presented her one-year-and-seven-month-old daughter at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for medical attention.
However, as the day progressed, she reportedly confessed to administering the toxic substance to her child, citing her inability to cope with her daughter’s epilepsy as the motive.
Confirming the reports, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin affirmed that Rukayat had been placed under arrest, and an exhaustive investigation into the matter had been launched.
He said, “Detectives of the division were immediately dispatched to the hospital, and they met the baby receiving treatment, and the mother has been taken into custody after treatment, and the investigation is ongoing.”
