Speaking RoyalTimes on Tuesday, Adekunle highlighted the importance of preparedness, especially considering the increased likelihood of fire outbreaks during the dry season.
He urged the public to equip themselves with fire extinguishers, emphasizing their usefulness in preventing and managing fire incidents at homes, in vehicles, and in shops.
“We all ought to get a portable fire extinguisher in our homes and shops because fire outbreaks usually start from being a minor case before it causes major destruction,” he said.
Adekunle also expressed concern about the growing trend of “prank calls” directed at the Fire Service. He lamented that such frivolous calls not only waste valuable resources but also divert attention from genuine emergencies, potentially endangering lives and properties.
“This usually happens during April Fool’s Day, it is very saddening because the fire services are being taken for granted. We don’t deceive people, so we expect not to be deceived in return. Whenever you see a fire truck, you should be aware that there’s a problem going on somewhere.”
In addition to fire safety measures, Adekunle addressed recent reports of individuals falling into wells and rivers across the state. He confirmed that a significant percentage of these incidents in 2023 involved mentally-challenged persons.
The Fire Service spokesperson urged parents and guardians to exercise increased vigilance over their children to prevent such accidents.
“95% of people who we’ve recovered from wells in 2023 are people who were suffering with mental issues, so I urge the citizens to avoid sending children to fetch water or going near the well”
