The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kwara State Chapter, Mallam AbdulLateef Hameed, has expressed his support for the court’s decision to nullify broadcasting codes empowering the Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) to impose fines on media houses.
Mallam AbdulLateef endorsed the court’s order, stating, “The mode of fining by the NBC has, at times, been heart-wrenching for media houses. I stand in support of the court’s decision as it upholds democratic principles, preventing the infringement of people’s rights by the government.”
Acknowledging the potential for misuse, he cautioned, “While supporting the court’s ruling, it’s important to note that media houses must also be responsible in their actions. NBC might resort to legal measures if media houses exploit this situation.”
Highlighting the recourse available, he mentioned, “If the NBC deems this decision unfair, the option to appeal exists. This legal process ensures a thorough examination of the case.”
In a call for collaboration, Mallam AbdulLateef emphasized, “To avoid future misunderstandings, I urge both the NBC and media houses to work hand in hand. As human beings, we sometimes exceed our capacities. I propose a meeting between NBC and media houses to discuss the way forward and enhance professionalism within the industry.”
