The Kwara State Government has called on the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to enhance its service delivery regarding electricity supply in the state.
This call was made by the state Commissioner for Energy, Engr. AbdulAzeez Kola AbdulGaniy, during a courtesy visit by the Kwara State Regional Head of IBEDC, Engr. Toyin Akinyosoye, and his team at the ministry’s conference hall in Ilorin, the state capital.
Engr. AbdulGaniy emphasized the need for improvement in service delivery, citing numerous complaints from communities regarding issues such as exorbitant bills and electricity unavailability, which negatively impact businesses.
With the recent passage of the Electricity Act empowering states to participate in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, Engr. AbdulGaniy highlighted the potential for increased competition in the energy sector among stakeholders.
Engr AbdulGaniy said, “You need to improve on your service because we have many issues that have been brought to the Ministry by some communities, people complained about outrageous bills and unavailability of electricity, which is posing a downturn to some businesses.
“Now that the Electricity Act has been passed, states are now empowered to generate, transmit and distribute electricity, which may lead to competition in the energy sector among stakeholders,” the commissioner told the visiting team.
The Director, Electrical Engineering, in the ministry, Engr. Anthony Ayodeji Alago, noted that “the state government, in its effort to improve the well-being of its residents in terms of infrastructural development, has given transformers to communities, yet most of those communities have not been connected to the national grid by the distribution company.”
He therefore urged the newly deployed regional head of IBEDC to work together with the ministry.
“Please ensure you provide more power supply in the state in order to alleviate the sufferings of the residents,” Engr. Alago appealed.
Echoing the commissioner’s sentiments, the Director of Electrical Engineering in the ministry, Engr. Anthony Ayodeji Alago, emphasized the state government’s efforts in providing infrastructure to improve residents’ well-being. However, he noted that some communities provided with transformers are yet to be connected to the national grid by IBEDC.
Engr. Alago urged the newly deployed regional head of IBEDC to collaborate closely with the ministry to address these challenges and ensure improved power supply across the state.
In response, Engr. Toyin Akinyosoye, the Kwara State Regional Head of IBEDC, commended the state government for its collaborative efforts. He pledged to strengthen the existing network structure and take immediate action to address issues raised, including the metering of ministries, departments, and agencies in the state.
