The Kwara State Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (KWACCIMA) has demanded the creation of an alternative dispute resolution mechanism to settle business cases in court.
KWACCIMA made the demand during a courtesy visit to the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kwara State Barrister Senior Ibrahim Sulyman on Wednesday.
President Of KWACCIMA, Chief Mrs Ronke Adeyemi during the visit demanded speedy conclusion of court cases involving business activities, noting that as entrepreneurs time is valued.
Chief Adeyemi further asked for procedures for business owners to resolve conflicts in the sector, lamenting that the alternative dispute resolution centre is not performing its task.
“Court processes are especially slow and tedious. As business people we value time. What can we do to resolve disputes in business? We already have an alternative dispute resolution centre in Kwara, but it is not performing its task.
We need to have a vibrant alternative dispute resolution mechanism in place. Both Civil and Criminal aspects can be sorted out here in a very short time.
Our purpose of coming to the Kwara State ministry of Justice today is that we hope to set up a committee composed of members of the ministry of justice and KWACCIMA to finalize details about the creation of an alternative dispute resolution mechanism.”
In his remarks, Barrister Sulyman said “policies and laws that promote businesses in Kwara are welcomed.”
He, however, called for synergy between the judiciary and KWACCIMA for the creation of the dispute resolution mechanism.
“We need to synergize further as partners in progress. We are working on a small case court. Where small business disputes would be settled, but we didn’t factor in an alternative dispute resolution mechanism in view of what the KWACCIMA president said.”
“We’ll work on this with the chamber, however I’m not making a firm commitment on that yet. The president mentioned setting up a committee in conjunction with the ministry of justice, but that’s too expressive for now. Going forward we’ll see how we can work together.”
