The Kwara State chapter of the Independent Petroleum Marketers of Association of Nigerian (IPMAN) has attributed the scarcity of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly called petrol in Ilorin, and its environs to the leadership crisis rocking Petroleum Tankers Driver (PTD) in Saki, Oyo State.
No fewer than ten fully loaded PMS tanks belonging to NNPC, BOVAS and RANOL meant for public consumption in Ilorin and its environs, were seen impounded at NNPC depot Oke-Oyi outskirts of Ilorin on Friday morning because of the crisis.
State Chairman of IPMAN, Alhaji Abdulateef Kamaja, while addressing journalists in Ilorin said the crisis that led to the burning of houses and petrol tankers in Saki was said to have prompted the state leadership of PTD to stop petrol tankers from coming to Saki, in order not to escalate the crisis.
Alhaji Kamaja said that the PTD extended its sanction when tanks that were branded “Ilorin” were wrongfully sighted, thinking they were taking petrol to Saki, contrary to its rightful destination in Baruten and Kaiama while IPMAN noted that it is unfair to stop other marketers but allow major marketers such as NNPC, BOVAS and RANOL to bring petrol to Ilorin.
He called on the stakeholders, particularly government to intervene in order to enable people of Kwara State have access to petrol and hinted that the current buying price of the PMS is between one hundred and eighty- six naira (N186) and one hundred and ninety naira (N190) from Lagos saying it is higher than the selling price of N180 per litre at pump price.
